Septic Systems

Businesses located in rural or unsewered areas of King County use septic systems to treat and dispose of wastewater. While septic systems are adequate for treating wastewater from households or other domestic activities, they are not designed to handle chemicals and industrial wastewater generated by businesses, including medical and dental offices and hair salons.

A septic system that operates improperly can pose health risks by contaminating surface and groundwater sources with pathogens and chemicals. EQT staff, working with other permitting agencies, can help businesses prevent pollution from inappropriate discharges into the septic system.

The Interagency Resource for Achieving Cooperation has published a fact sheet titled β€œNon-residential Septic Tank Systems: Information for Business Users and Property Owners.”

The King County Industrial Waste Program has provided information on β€œSending commercial septage to the King County sewage system.”
