Sharps are not accepted at the household hazardous waste facilities.
In King County, sharps, including syringes clipped with a needle, can be disposed of in the garbage if the sharps are placed in a puncture resistant container such as a two (2) liter PET pop bottle, with a tight fitting or taped lid and labeled "SHARPS, DO NOT RECYCLE."
In the City of Seattle, no syringes or sharps, even if clipped, can be disposed of in the garbage. They should be placed in a puncture resistant container with a tight fitting lid, labeled "SHARPS, DO NOT RECYCLE" and taken to the North or South Transfer station and placed in the collection bin for disposal.
Check with your pharmacy to see whether they accept containers of sharps for disposal. All Bartell Drugs stores accept and dispose of sharps/needles for a fee. Bartell Drugs stores sell a sharps container that includes a sticker to attach to the container indicating that the disposal fee has been paid. Bartells accepts other similar sharps containers from residents starting at $2.00 for a quart size container on up. Contact your local Bartell Drugs store for more information.
