Hazardous Chemicals in Schools

Schools can contain hazardous chemicals that can pose significant risks to the health of teachers, staff and students. These chemicals can be found in science labs and stockrooms, art classrooms and storage areas, and facilities maintenance and custodial storage rooms. The award-winning Rehab the Lab program provides science teacher trainings, educational tools, on-site technical assistance visits to help schools safely, easily and inexpensively store their lab chemicals or dispose of hazardous lab wastes.

Since January 1, 2006, public and private schools in Washington are prohibited from purchasing, storing or using most mercury-containing products and materials under the RCW 70.95M
